Rome facing a mountain of coffins awaiting cremation

Some two thousand coffins have been waiting for weeks, if not months, to be cremated in Rome, a dramatic situation mainly due to bureaucratic slowness that led funeral directors’ staff to demonstrate near the town hall on Friday. “We appeal to the mayor of Rome (Virginia Raggi, editor’s note) to put an end to the current steps to obtain the necessary authorizations for the cremation”, explained to AFP Giovanni Caccioli, the national secretary of the Italian Federation of Funeral Directors, at the initiative of the demonstration organized in front of the Roman Temple of Hercules Victor, a stone’s throw from the town hall.

“We can’t go on like this anymore”

According to Giovanni Caccioli, Rome records each year from 15 to 18,000 cremation requests, for which the families must undertake a “tortuous” journey between the manager of the cemetery, the municipal company Ama which manages the cemeteries (but also the garbage! ) and civil status. An obstacle course made even more difficult in times of Covid due to the rise in the number of deaths and limited access to municipal services. “This is an absurd situation which extends the delays of obtaining”, denounced the national secretary, surrounded by his colleagues with funeral wreaths decorated with the inscription “Pardon us but we are not allowed to bury your dear ones “.

“Everything is done in the antique style” and takes on average “35-40 days”, “a very serious situation for a family which has just suffered mourning”, he laments. “We can no longer continue like that (…) The authorization to proceed with the cremation must be issued in one or two days maximum”, he concluded. “In the other municipalities of Italy, it is the civil registry which directly gives these authorizations within 24-48 hours”.

“The Covid and that in addition …”

Maurizio Tersini, a 59-year-old man with a dynamic appearance who runs the funeral agency Le Sphinx, estimates the number of coffins awaiting cremation in refrigerated depots in the capital at around 1,800. “For us, it is a great suffering vis-à-vis the families,” he said. Lorella Pesaresi, a small brunette woman with glasses who lost her husband in January, tested positive for Covid when he had to start chemotherapy, told AFP her ordeal, her voice broken by sorrow: “It’s been three months that I wait for the cremation of my husband and nothing has been done yet (…) It is not fair: the Covid and that in addition ”.
