Remembering Selena: California muralists reflect on Selena

LOS ANGELES – It has been more than 25 years since Selena Quintanilla, the queen of music Tejano, was tragically killed. But in the hearts and minds of so many people, she lives. And the murals are a very public way of honoring his life and legacy. Among the artists who have paid tribute is Los Angeles-based Levi Ponce.

“For me, Selena is just my childhood. Like growing up on airwaves, there wasn’t much that represented me, that represented my people, my city, my pueblo, my neighborhood. There weren’t many, ”Ponce said. “And Selena was everywhere in English and Spanish.”

In 1995, Selena was only 23 when she passed away. Friday would have been his 50th birthday. For Hayward muralist Irene Shiori, Selena’s impact endures.

“For me, Selena is a very iconic idol for women, for Mexican Americans, for the Chicano culture, her influence in fashion and music,” Shiori said.

Shiori teamed up with Danial Paniagua, a muralist from Stockton, to add a Selena mural in Stockton.

“She was just an inspiration to us as people as a community. And we just felt like we needed a mural like that, that would pay homage to her in a way here in Stockton, CA, because we’ve never had a mural of her, ” Paniagua said.

And each mural is unique. Many artists have said that their inspiration came from something about Selena and her experience resonating with them.

“It’s black and white like kind of… it’s a thing of the past,” Ponce said of his mural in Los Angeles. “But everything around her is in color, like all the joy that surrounds her and all the joy she radiated from that smile.” Whether it’s her success as a Mexican-American, her music, her fashion, or her love for fans, the murals celebrate all that Selena was and continues to be, because, as her fans have said, “Anything for Selenas”.
